My Story

Sonya’s deep passion for God, and the hope that she believes is meant for all people, began as a teenager when she grew up in South Africa in the 1980’s. She was the daughter of missionaries who ministered to people of all races and socio-economic status during a time of great struggle against apartheid. Her passion for justice and her compassion for the broken hearted began there in South Africa. However, her own journey within a family experiencing divorce, addiction and mental health struggles secured her desire to bring healing and hope to others.

Sonya graduated from Oklahoma Christian University with a BA in Psychology and then went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of Central Oklahoma. She has been licensed by the State of Oklahoma since 1994 as a Licensed Professional Counselor. She has worked in many secular settings including, community mental health centers, school settings, and was a part of the OKC bombing mental health recovery program. This experience led her into Critical Incident Debriefing which she was able to use in New York City immediately following 9/11 and now with local disasters.

After working in the secular fields of counseling Sonya turned towards Christian ministry development where she initiated and directed programs that served to support groups and individuals of all ages on several life issues. She also taught classes and held seminars for marriage preparation, marriage enrichment and parenting skills.

Sonya has an established private counseling practice that addresses the following issues: mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, ADHD, addiction, abuse, family issues, marriage difficulties and general adjustments in life. She has worked with all ages and enjoys working with people integrating their faith and their desire for change in their life.

Sonya has been married for 27 years and has 3 children. She has made Edmond her home after growing up in the mission fields of Canada and South Africa. Sonya loves to travel and involve herself in mission work. She and her family love sports, theatre and the outdoors. She wants to promote healing and hope as she uses clinically based counseling techniques combined with grace and love from God.
